Airtel has launched 3G services in Bengaluru last week. Here is the article consisting of its plan details and tariff explained in simple terms.
I understand there would be lot of doubts and questions running through your mind right from “Can I use it?” to “How to activate?”. So here in this post I have made an attempt to answer such queries and doubts to help you.
Well, here we go…….
1> What is 3G ?
3G is the next generation communication technology that gives you the power of higher speeds to enjoy multimedia services , internet access, social networks, stream videos, live TV, video calls and more.
2> How is 3G different from 2G?
3G allows high-speed Internet and data services on the move. With 3G you can make video calls and use a host of other multimedia services which are not available in 2G.
3> What are the prerequisites to use 3G?
3G enabled handset/USB internet modem & airtel 3G network.
4> Do I need to change my existing Airtel sim?
You will not need to change your airtel SIM card to enjoy airtel 3G services.
5> What all can I do with 3G?
- Connect to family and friends – Face-to-face video calling. In real-time!
- Connect to the internet with super-fast page loading times.
- Download and upload large files at blazing fast speeds.
- Get your entertainment on the go – Real time streaming of music and videos.
- Send and receive mails with large attachments.
- Download and play interactive HD games.
6> Can I download, upload and share Videos with 3G?
Yes – but at speeds you never experinced before.
7> Are there any specific features to look for while buying a 3G phone?
Yes! Not all mobile handsets available in the market support the 3G network, and others offer sub-optimal performance.
There are two kinds of 3G phones available – HSPA and WCDMA enabled. Airtel recommends using HSPA handsets for higher speeds and the best 3G experience.
8> What are these HSPA and WCDMA?
- HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) protocol allows data connections up to 21 Mbps per user in good coverage and quality conditions.
- WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) is a 3G technology version that allows data connections up to 384 kbps per user in good coverage and quality conditions.
9> Is my mobile 3G ready?

10> I am not a airtel user, how can I switch to airtel 3G services on the same mobile no?
New users will need to buy a new airtel 3G connection to use the 3G services
11> What will happen if I am out of 3G coverage area?
You will continue to access 2G/2.5G services in areas where 3G coverage is absent but you have to ensure that your network setting on your phone is on dual mode.
12> Will I get 3G even while roaming?
Yes! You can access 3G services while roaming outside home network if you are in 3G covered area.
13> How to know whether I am on 3G or not?
When your mobile connection is activated for 3G services, you will receive a confirmation from airtel and you will be able to latch on to 3G network and will see 3G/3.5G on your phone instead of Edge or 2G.
14> Can I add my laptop to my existing cell phone account, with the 3G service covering both? Or do I need to pay separately for each? If separately, can I get 3G just for my laptop, or can I use my cell phone as a 3G model for my laptop?
Laptops without 3G capability will not be able to latch on to a 3G network. For using your laptop to browse the Internet, you will need to use it as mentioned below:
• Use 3G phone as a modem and connect it with your Laptop/Desktop to browse Internet at High Speeds.
• Alternatively, if you want to use your laptop or desktop, you could use airtel USB Data Cards to browse internet at High Speed.
In cases of Netbooks which have a SIM card slot, the 3G activated SIM could be inserted and these netbooks can then be used to browse internet.
15> What are the limits on data transfer each month?
This will be based on the 3G Data plan that you will activate.
16> How do I know if I’ve exceeded the usage limits?
Airtel will keep you informed through sms about your usage.
17> Will I need to get special software – from airtel or someone else – to use 3G service on my PC?
In case you are using a 3G activated phone as a modem, then the device PC software will need the PC suite/software provided along with the phone during purchase.
18> Do I need any other software installed while using USB Data Card ?
No, there will have a plug and play option with the data card that will automatically download the required software on your computer to initiate browsing. There will be no additional cost to download these softwares.
19> Is 3G provided while Roaming on other networks?
No, Roaming on 3G only on Airtel 3G network.
20> Are Video Calls on ISD & other international roaming allowed?
21> Can I recharge with a new data pack while I already have other existing data pack?
You cannot recharge a data pack with another data pack till previous balance is above 50MB.
22> On recharge with a new data pack , will I get the earlier data balance?
No, earlier data balance will be forfeited.
23> Would I get the full promised speed to me?
The truth is that the Internet speed would depend on multiple factors like time of day, number of simultaneous users & web pages accessed etc. So it’s not guaranteed.
