5 Best Internet Download Managers or Accelerators for Windows that are FREE [updated]

IDM (Internet Download Manager) is the best download manager for Windows, but it is not free.

Many have got their computers hacked using keygens and cracks for IDM. This made me come up with a list of Free download managers that can act as an alternative to IDM and are also safe to use.

Over the years, numerous download managers have popped up on the Internet, but I have tested them all to give you the best.

Whether you’re a web video addict, constant software downloader, MP3 freak, or BitTorrent junkie, I have found some power downloading tools for you.

Downloads on Internet are common. We don’t even have a count of how many times we download everyday! We keep downloading every now and then.

When downloads play such a vital role in our everyday Internet life, don’t you feel that you need a tool that helps you download in a simpler and faster way ?

Download Managers – Yes, these are the tools that help you accelerate, manage and time all of your downloads.

One extremely useful feature of download managers are in resuming interrupted transfers. Now, that I feel is so important.

I have faced situations where I was downloading a 1GB file and the download stopped right at 95%. I had to again start it from the first..

God! I get damn frustrated in such scenarios. Even you would have faced many such situations, right!

This is the reason why I feel download managers are a must have on one’s computer.

How do download managers speed-up downloads?

The main technique of download managers are file segmentation and multi-part downloading.

That is, splitting the file up into many pieces, and downloading each chunk simultaneously. This is what accelerates the file download.

They simply have multiple connections open to a site to speed things up.

Amazingly, sometimes it can speed up your downloads by almost five to ten times.

Some frown on this, but the positive is: you get the file downloaded quickly in a given time.

Which is the Best?

Over the years, numerous download managers have popped up, but I have tested all of them to give you the best.

Whether you’re a web video addict, constant software downloader, MP3 freak, or BitTorrent junkie, I have found some power downloading tools for you.

So, here are my picks of the best free download managers that get you the files you want fast and easy.

4 Best Internet Download Managers or Accelerators for Windows that are Free

Free Download Manager

FREE Best Internet Download Managers

Free Download Manager (FDM) is a free, open-source and a comprehensive Internet download manager.

FDM accelerates downloads by splitting files into sections and then downloading them simultaneously.

As a result download speed increases up to 600%, or even more!

FDM also resumes broken downloads so that you need not start downloading from the beginning after casual interruption.

Besides supporting the HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and BitTorrent protocols, the Free Download manager can also grab flash video content from various websites such as YouTube, Daily Media and Google Video.

One of the features that sets Free Download Manager apart from other similar software is the fact that it contains a media converter .

Furthermore, users can also extract the contents of the archives they download within the tool or even do a virus check using the antivirus solution installed on their computer.

If you want to boost your download speed for free, this utility is certainly worth a try.

JDownloaderJDownloader latest free download

JDownloader is a easy-to-use download manager that lets you quickly and efficiently download files from Internet.

This Java-based utility makes the whole file downloading process effortless, saving you the pain of endless pop-up windows, waiting times and download links cunningly hidden among dozens of Ads..

With this awesome utility you can simply add as many download links to it which will all be stored and processed one after the other.

The image verification or CAPTCHA is filled automatically by JDownloader which means that you can keep it running in the background all the time without having to actively manage the downloads.

Additionally, many “link encryption” sites are supported – so you just paste the “encrypted” links and JD does the rest.

JDownloader can import CCF, RSDF and the new DLC files.

It allows you to download flash videos from various video hosting websites like YouTube, Vimeo, clipfish video etc.

I need not speak about JDs ability to easily download streaming MP3s.

It can also automatically acquire a new IP address to save waiting time.

With JDownloader your downloads will be completed much faster!

FlashGet looks and feels like a download accelerator worth paying for, which makes it all the more appealing since it’s free.

After installation, a FlashGet icon appears on the upper right corner of your monitor where you can simply drag and drop the links to downloaded.

FlashGet can also integrate into your browser and take control over the files you attempt to download while surfing the web.

The best thing about FlashGet is actually the way it works. It’s incredibly fast and simple to use.

Every time you right-click a link that leads to a downloadable file, FlashGet comes into play and takes over.

FlashGet can call anti-virus automatically to clean virus, spyware and adware after finishing download.

Flashget can increase download speed from 6-10 times. It uses MHT (Multi-server Hyper-threading Transportation) technique and optimization arithmetic.

FlashGet supports HTTP, FTP, BT, MMS, RTSP and many other protocols.

FlashGet surely packs enough features to make it fun to use while providing great capabilities.

Download Accelerator PlusDownload Accelerator Plus latest full version download free

Download Accelerator Plus is a well-packed internet download accelerator that claims to increases your download speed by 400%.

In fact, high download speeds are Download Accelerator Plus’s bread and butter.

Besides splitting files into smaller pieces, DAP automatically searches several locations (mirrors) and use them for getting the files you need with increased speed.

It also can get a file simultaneously from several sites, which is useful if a particular site limits the download speed.

It can resume downloads; and it can preview some media files while downloading.

When you click on a download link, you’ll see that a Download Accelerator Plus has been integrated into your browser as an add-on and it will automatically take care of your downloads.

Download Accelerator Plus works with a Multi-Antivirus security analysis to protect you from most malicious downloads.

DAP allows you to schedule automatically put your PC into standby mode or hibernate it or even completely shut it down after a download has completed.

Supporting all the latest browser, customized to 42 different languages and optimized for HTTPS downloads, Download Accelerator is your choice for supersonic downloads.

I would say Mipony is a bit different from the rest of the download managers listed above.

Mipony is specially designed for automating downloading from File-Hosting sites.

It supports major file hosting sites like Putlocker, Rapidshare, Hotfile, Easy-share, Gigasize, Mediafire, Depositefiles, Fileserve, Filefactory, Uploading, 4shared, Letitbit, Sendspace, Mega etc.

In case, if a website requires you to enter a CAPTCHA to start the download, Mipony allows you to even do that with ease.

You can store the login information for Premium accounts in the program’s Options window, however, Mipony can download the files even without a paid account.

If a file host requires a waiting period, then the program starts the download immediately after the time passes.

Mipony can handle multiple downloads and also has the ability to pause the download and resume it later (if the file host allows this action).

If you are someone who regularly downloads from any of the above mentioned file hosting sites, you may definitely want to consider using this download manager.

Last Thoughts

So these are some of the best download managers.

I personally tested, analyzed and made an extensive survey on Internet before choosing all 5 of them.

Since all the listed download managers are free, they try to promote third-party ads or install some unnecessary toolbars.

However, it can be prevented by carefully installing, looking at every checkbox while you install.

But these softwares are a must have tool on one’s computer. Go for it. Choose the one you like and install it on your computer.

Download managers will certainly make your Internet life more easy and enjoyable.

Hello Nikhil, I am 70+ us ctzn and a beginner. I want to brows the internet bt afraid of virus & other such stuff. I have subscribed to yr post and getting regular emails. I have downloaded IDM but not running it since it says to enter the key. I do not know about this key stuff. Will u pl help me in this regard. I sincerely appreciate yr gesture and help. Thanks buddy God Bless U Raghbir Singh

        • Hi Raghbir, IDM needs a key to run. So i would suggest you to remove it and install free download manager. The link to download it can be found in this article above. Thank you for following us.
          Regards, Nikhil

  2. But how does these increase download speed? I had downloaded FDM for seeing how fast it can download. But even Firefox is faster than FDM. Same experience with orbit. Please tell me how can make them faster, like changing their settings, etc.

    • Hey Rohit, How you doin 🙂
After installing the download manager, did you re-start your computer? because , the settings will take charge once you restart.
FDM is really good. More that 165 Million people use it on their computer.
Not much of setting changes are necessary. Just Google in case you need more info on configuration settings.
I also suggest you to try JDownloader.

On your question, how it speeds up?
Firefox will generally download files in bits one after the other. It will open just a single connection with the server from which you are downloading files.

But Download managers open multiple connections to the server and hence download various bits of file simultaneously. This increases the speed drastically 🙂

Hope you settle down on to one of these 5 🙂

  3. Among the list, I will choose DAP. It’s quite fast and reliable. What about Down Them All addon for Mozilla Firefox? It’s pretty good download manager although it’s only an addon.

  4. farazfanofnikhil

Oh Im using GPRS through uninor mobile.Suggest the best manager and also a booster dude

  5. I installed the latest version of Orbit Downloader in Windows 7 Pro. When the computer is unattended during a long download, it may go to Sleep or Hibernate, causing the connection to be dropped. When I return, Orbit is not responding. I can get it to start again without reloading it, but then the download already made is deleted and it starts over, from the beginning!

I looked at the Options in Orbit but see nothing I can check, to keep Windows from doing this while a download is in progress.

On my older version of Windows I had Sleep (S3, even) turned on after a certain time, but I recall that that downloads would always finish normally.

What can I do? Is Orbit failing to do something to the OS, or can this be fixed with some Windows setting?

I hope you can help — I tried the Orbit forum and it’s loaded with spam. If the solution to this problem is there, I can’t see it, given the state of their board.

    • Hey Cameron,

It does happen so sometimes due to improper OS settings.
There are many tools that help you prevent sleep or hibernate mode.
Just google for one such software and install on your computer. 🙂

  6. Salam Kudhus

Specially “Free Download Manager” and “Mipony”.

  17. Kapil Kalra

    Hi Nikhil sir,
I need a suggestion, I need a download manager that completely compatible or suits Google chrome as I do my regular surfing work on Google chrome although I have been using FDM for an almost 1 year as you suggested in the post earlier ( same post before updating), but I found that its more compatible with IE more than chrome, furthermore it happens that I sometimes have to paste a link from Google Chrome to IE to start the downloading but sometimes it automatically detects the Download still not much detecting the downloads as IDM used to do. So is there any other download manager which i should try or keep using the FDM only.

    Thanks In Advance….

    Your Follower
    Kapil Kalra

    • Hey Kapil,

excluding IDM, FDM is your best bet! I have not come across tool better than that. But I was very impressed by Mipony if you intend to download from file hosting sites. Its a great tool.

    • So, you have two options.
      1. Orbit Downloader/Download ninja/ Eagleget (i think it has chrome support, not sure)
      2. (better option) Switch to firefox. Firefox is better. And keep using FDM
