Facebook includes an awesome chat feature that lets you instantly start conversations with your buddies. And most of us love chatting. But most of the times we end up chatting with the people whom we don’t intend to.

Take for example incidents of my friends. One of my friend Rahul, has a strict dad. His dad always used to restrict him from using Facebook. The worst part of the story was they both were friends on Facebook. Whenever Rahul tried to chat on Facebook, his dad would quickly enter a chat with him and then Rahul had no other choice than to go offline. This way Rahul was fed up with his social life. He was desperately searching for a solution to this problem of his.

My other friend Swetha finds Vinay to be interesting. She just wants to chat with Vinay and share a few bits with him every day. Of course, she does chat with Vinay, but she also has Ravi, Sumanth, Anirudh and Gowda pinging her at the same time. Obviously, she can’t ignore the other guys as they are her friends but at the same time, she doesn’t want to be chatting with them either. She was desperately searching for a solution too.

Both now have an easy solution. Rahul now chats 24/7 on Facebook without his dad’s intervention while Swetha only chats with Vinay.

How to appear offline to selected friends on Facebook?

There are many scenarios which are undesirable like the above ones. You don’t have to become completely invisible or logout of Facebook to handle such situations. You can stay offline from few and also stay online to others following these few simple steps.

1. Lets say you turned on the chat by clicking on “Turn on chat” on the lower right bottom of the page.

2. Next you will see all your Facebook friends who are online.

3. Lets say you have a friend or a bunch of friends to whom you want to stay invisible or offline, then all you need to do is click on Settings icon as seen in the screen-shot below.

4. A new window opens. Here click on “Advanced Settings…“

5. Now, you will be shown with 3 options namely  Turn on chat for all friends except…, Turn on chat for only some friends…, Turn off chat.

Choose the option you need accordingly.

If you want to appear offline to just a few friends, then choose the first option “Turn on chat for all friends except…” and enter their names.

If you want to appear offline to everyone else other than a few friends, then choose the option “Turn on chat for only some friends…” and enter the names of your friends to whom you want to appear online.

Last but not the least, to end the chat you can choose the last option – “Turn off chat”.
